Alzheimer\'s disease (AD) is characterized pathologically by the presence of intracellular neurofibrillary tangles and deposition of β-amyloid (Aβ) peptides. It is urgent to develop effective therapies for the treatment of AD, since our society rapidly accelerate aging. Aβ peptides have been believed to be neurotoxic and now are also considered to have affects on the mechanism of memory formation, which are generated by processing of amyloid precursor protein (APP). In this study, effects of Styrax Liquides (SL) on the metabolism of APP were analyzed. SL inhibited the secretion of Aβ from the Neuro2a cell line (APPswe cell) expressing a mutation of APPswe. Immunoblotting study showed that it inhibited β-site APP cleaving enzyme (BACE) from the APPswe cells. We suggest that SL inhibits APP metabolism and Aβ generation by the means of BACE inhibitory mechanism. This is the first report that SL inhibits the secretion of Aβ peptides from neuroblastoma cells.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of water extract from Artemisiae Argi Folium Fermented with Sacchromyces cerevisiae (AFS) on hydrogen peroxide production within human hepatocyte HepG2 cells treated with gallic acid, EtOH, nicotine, acetaminophen, and acetaldehyde. AFS (0~400 ug/mL) was treated with gallic acid, EtOH, nicotine, acetaminophen, and acetaldehyde. And the intracellular productions of hydrogen peroxide were measured by dihydrorhodamine 123 (DHR) assay. AFS showed the restoration of the intracellular productions of hydrogen peroxide which were reduced by gallic acid, EtOH, nicotine, acetaminophen, and acetaldehyde in HepG2 Cells. AFS could be supposed to have the hepatoprotective effect related with hepatocytologic signaling activity against gallic acid, EtOH, nicotine, acetaminophen, and acetaldehyde.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of garlic(Allium sativum L.) extracts with extraction conditions on antioxidant and anticancer activity. The extracts prepared for garlic by hot temperature extraction (HG), low temperature extraction (LG), UMPM extraction (UG), fermentation (FG) and black garlic hot temperature (BG) method. Content of total polyphenol compound was the BG higher than other extracts. The EDA (electron donating ability) and SOD-like activity was increased in dose-dependent manners, and the activity of BG and UM was significantly higher than LG and FG. We examined cytotoxicity, nitric oxide production of Raw 264.7 cell and inhibition of HT 1080 cell by MTT assay. All extracts does not have any toxic effects in macrophages(Raw 264.7). And UG inhibited the production of nitrite in Raw 264.7 cells activated with LPS. The antitumor effects of LG and UG on HT 1080 cell was indicated a significantly inhibition activity. These results suggested that UG (UMPM extraction of garlic) have activities of antioxidant, anticancer effects.

Piper nigrum Linne has been used spice as well as herbal medicine in worldwide and has function of anti-oxidant, anti-inflammation, anti-cancer, bioavailability of drugs and etc. In this study, anti-adipogenic activity of Piper nigrum Linne extract and its constituent piperine were investigated in 3T3-L1 differentiation. Adipogenic effects and lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 was measured by RT-PCR and Oil Red O staining assays respectively in stimulation of Piper nigrum Linne extract and piperine. Piper nigrum Linne and piperine reduced lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 differentiation and expression of genes associated with adipogenesis such as PPARγ, adipsin, SERBP-1c and LPL. All of taken, anti-adipogenic mechanism of Piper nigrum Linne and piperine were related with regulation of SREBP-1c and PPARγ expression.
