Previously standardization study for identifying 5 types of pattern identification of stroke patients has been performed and the Korean standard of pattern identification (II) was developed. In the present study we investigated the interactions between total indices designated by the Korean standard of pattern identification(KSPI II) and indices for PI of Cold-Heat and Deficiency-Excess. Indicators for Cold-Heat and Deficiency-Excess are isolated from 58 indices through the survey of oriental medicine doctors and their relationship with KSPI-II indices was analyzed by corresponding analysis method using data of 1581 stroke patients. Means and standard deviations indicated that 2 Cold indices, 14 Heat indices, 12 Deficiency indices, and 5 Excess indices were included for Cold-Heat and Deficiency-Excess pattern identification. The results of corresponding analysis shows the relationship of 57 indices and 4 types of pattern identification (excluding 1 index and 1 pattern among 58 indices and 5 patterns) using the cross-tabulation which was obtained from the clinical data. Most of Cold and Heat index were divided to dimension 1(inertia 51.9%) obtained from the result of corresponding analysis. Deficiency and Excess index were partially associated with dimension 2(inertia 31.7%). These data suggest that pattern identification of Cold-Heat plays an role in the standardization of pattern identification in stroke, although further studies are required by various trials such as analysis of surveys and clinical data.

Hyangsapyeongwi-san has been used for various gastrointestinal diseases in Oriental medicine. Nevertheless, there is little known to scientific evidence for its efficacy and mechanism. This study was aimed to investigate effects of Hyangsapyeongwi-san in gastrointestinal diseases through the analysis of articles. A total of 15 articles were selected from PubMed, KTKP, and Weipu. The selected articles were analyzed according to three aspects of study types, target diseases and its efficacy, and results of clinical studies. Hyangsapyeongwi-san has positive effects in gastrointestinal disorders, such as prevent gastric mucosal injury, improve hyperacidity and dyspepsia, protect oxidative damage, and antitumor effects and enhance both cellular and humoral immunity. However, it proved insufficient to confirm its efficacy owing to lack of clinical studies of high quality. So, we need well designed studies to verify clinical efficacy of Hyangsapyeongwi-san hereafter.

Dang Jonghae put in order symptoms to volume one of Uihakgyeonneung by the attack region of illness, to volume two of Uihakgyeonneung by systemic symptoms, and ones peculiar to gynecology and pediatrics to volume three of Uihakgyeonneung. He presented the basis of a differential diagnosis by Yin-Yang, heat and cold, weakness and firmness. He seized the cause and mechanism of a disease obviously and took measures to cope with a disease. These were the result of his rationality that he integrated the Chinese and Western medicine. That is to say, he summarized the voluminous medical books and extracted the essential ones to utilize conveniently, and he made us grasp the essence of medicine to make symptoms concrete. Therefore, we can study this book as the fundamental courses to make use of basic research and clinical medicine.
