OBJECTIVES
This case is to report the effect of Oryeong-san and acupuncture therapy on serum creatinine level of a cerebral infarction patient with diabetic nephropathy.

METHODS
A female Korean patient was treated with Oryeong-san, acupuncture for total 32 days. We observed renal function test, input/output balance, body weight, hand and foot circumferences, and other symptoms like edema, urination, and any adverse event.

RESULTS
After treatment, serum creatinine level was improved to 2.48mg/dL from 3.45mg/dL at admission, and foot circumference was decreased to 18.5~18.9cm from 22.0~22.5cm without any adverse event. However, we couldn’t find any significant differences on input/output balance, body weight, or symptoms of urination.

CONCLUSIONS
This case suggests that Oryeong-san and acupuncture therapy could be effective in improving serum creatinine clearance of cerebral infarction patient with diabetic nephropathy.

It is difficult to combine oriental and western medicine. Each medicine has a different academic background, perspective on the world, and studying methodology. The claim that two paradigms can not be combined is not obtained from an actual verification, but this means it is so hard to combine two medicines having different backgrounds.
The amalgamation of oriental and western medicine should be phased in on the basis of the continuous reciprocal understanding and commitment.
First, the strength and weakness of each medicine over the treatment and research are required to be identified. Then, a few complementary areas can be chosen enabling a trial of fusion on a small scale. A cycle of problem solving and a new research can be set by analyzing research results obtained through the implementation over a period of time. In other words, the researchers of oriental and western medicine should repeat a continuous and gradual complementary research process by identifying issues to be improved and complemented through a consensus. Once the methodology obtained through the process of problem solving and proficient implementation is established in a stable condition, a method to widen the fusion area by expanding the operating area and implementation method can be chosen.
However, the integral system of oriental medicine shouldn't be substituted by mechanical idea or reductionism. What should be done primarily for oriental medicine is to objectify things through quantification. In particular, the oriental treatment should accept the microscopic diagnosis to determine the structure and observe the biochemical change.

Objectives: The purpose of this clinical study is to evaluate the effect of Korean Medical Treatment on a 79 years old Korean female with shoulder pain after stroke.

Methods: She was treated with moxibustion, acupuncture, electroacupuncture and herbal medicine. We evaluated the improvement by Numeric Rating Scale(NRS) of shoulder pain and frequency of awakening due to shoulder pain

Results: After 24 Days, total score of NRS was decreased from 7 to 2.1. Average sleep time was increased and waking up due to shoulder pain was decreased during the night.

Conclusions: This study suggests that Korean medical treatment, especially Moxibustion could be effective to reduce shoulder pain and alleviate sleep disturbance. Further studies are needed.

Objectives: The purpose of this case study is to report the effect of Gami SSanghwa-Tang on a patient with central post-stroke pain.
Methods: The patient was treated with herbal medicine Gami SSanghwa-Tang, acupuncture, pharmaco-acupuncture, and moxibustion. The treatment effect was evaluated by Numerical Rating Scale(NRS), Neuropathic Pain Symptom Inventory(NPSI), and 36-item Short-form Health Survey(SF-36).
Results: After the treatment, the NRS score of pain intensity was reduced from moderate to mild degree. The total NPSI score and subscores also decreased, as the various features of the pain were relieved. The SF-36 score increased, as the patient's quality of life improved.
Conclusion: This case study suggests that Gami SSanghwa-Tang could be effective in reducing pain and improving quality of life of patients suffering from central post-stroke pain.
