| ■ Abstract This case report describes a patient diagnosed with post-stroke complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) type I who underwent a 48-day course of integrative Korean medicine treatment, including scalp acupuncture with electrical stimulation, manual acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, moxibustion, herbal medicine, and conventional medication. Scalp acupuncture was applied to the motor and sensory areas, and treatment efficacy was assessed using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), the Quick-Version of the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (Quick-DASH), and the Korean version of the Modified Barthel Index (K-MBI). Following treatment, the patient experienced significant improvement, with NRS decreasing from 9 to 1, Quick-DASH from 94.55 to 54.55, and K-MBI increasing from 62 to 83. These findings suggest that scalp acupuncture with electrical stimulation, combined with integrative Korean medicine treatment, may provide significant pain relief and functional improvement in patients with CRPS type I. ■ Keywords scalp acupuncture, stroke, complex regional pain syndrome, CRPS |

| ■ Abstract Background: Acute colonic pseudo-obstruction (ACPO) is a condition characterized by colonic dilatation without mechanical obstruction and is thought to be associated with autonomic imbalance. Therapeutic options remain limited when drug therapy is contraindicated or ineffective. This study aimed to report the effectiveness of Haegeupchokcho-tang in a patient with suspected ACPO during the recovery phase after intracerebral hemorrhage. Case presentation: A 63-year-old female patient in the recovery phase after intracerebral hemorrhage developed suspected ACPO. She complained of recurrent postprandial abdominal pain, distension, frequent defecation, and tenesmus. Abdominopelvic computed tomography revealed colonic dilatation without mechanical obstruction, leading to a diagnosis of suspected ACPO. Haegeupchokcho-tang was prescribed according to pattern identification, along with acupuncture, electroacupuncture, and moxibustion therapy. Following treatment, the intensity and frequency of abdominal pain gradually decreased, with improvements in abdominal distension and tenesmus, as well as radiographic reduction of intestinal gas on abdominal X-ray. No recurrence of abdominal pain was observed until the completion of treatment. Conclusion: This study describes an intracerebral hemorrhage patient who presented with suspected ACPO and showed improvement in abdominal pain and distension managed by Haegeupchokcho-tang and Korean medicine therapies. | ■Abstract Background and Objectives: Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor symptoms such as bradykinesia, rigidity, and postural instability. Among its subtypes, the postural instability and gait difficulty (PIGD) type shows poor prognosis and limited response to conventional pharmacotherapy. This case report aims to present the improvement of gait disturbance and lower limb edema in a patient with idiopathic Parkinson’s disease following Korean medicine treatment. Case Presentation: A 83-year-old male patient diagnosed with idiopathic Parkinson’s disease (PIGD subtype) was admitted for 26 days with complaints of gait disturbance, postural instability, and bilateral lower limb edema. The patient received Korean medicine treatments including Hyungbangjihwang-tang, Gojin-eumja, acupuncture, pharmaco-acupuncture, electroacupuncture, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), and moxibustion. Symptom changes were evaluated using a three-dimensional gait analysis system (G-WALK), the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS), and daily measurements of bilateral ankle circumference. After treatment, improvements were observed in gait speed, stride length, and gait symmetry on G-WALK analysis. UPDRS Part II and III scores decreased, and bilateral ankle circumference also showed a gradual reduction. Conclusion: This case suggests that Korean medicine treatment may be beneficial in improving gait disturbance and alleviating lower limb edema in patients with idiopathic Parkinson’s disease. ■ Keyword Idiopathic Parkinson’s disease, Gait disturbance, Lower limb edema, Three-dimensional gait analysis, Korean medicine treatment |

| ■ Abstract Background: Progressive muscular atrophy (PMA) is a rare subtype of motor neuron disease characterized by progressive weakness and muscle atrophy resulting from lower motor neuron degeneration. Currently, there is no established curative treatment for PMA, and management is primarily symptomatic. This case report describes the clinical improvement of a PMA patient following Korean medicine treatment. Case report: A 74-year-old female patient with a 10-year history of progressive left-sided weakness and muscle atrophy was provisionally diagnosed with PMA based on electromyography, nerve conduction studies, and clinical findings. Despite repeated hospitalizations and conventional medical treatment, her neurological symptoms exhibited progressive deterioration. The patient underwent Korean medicine treatment, including herbal medication (Bojungikgi-tang), acupuncture, electroacupuncture, pharmacopuncture, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), and moxibustion for approximately one month. After treatment, objective improvements were observed in functional performance scores: the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) increased from 8 to 12, the Modified Barthel Index (MBI) from 92 to 100, and the Manual Function Test (MFT) scores improved bilaterally. The circumferential difference between the lower extremities decreased by 1 cm, and the patient reported subjective improvements in gait stability and muscle strength. Conclusion: This case suggests that Korean medicine treatment may enhance muscle function and activities of daily living in patients with PMA. Although the findings are limited by the single-case design and the non-uniform timing of assessments, the report highlights the potential of Korean medicine as a complementary therapeutic option for rare neurodegenerative diseases lacking established treatment strategies. ■ Keywords Progressive muscular atrophy, Korean medicine, Bojungikgi-tang, acupuncture, electroacupuncture, pharmacoacupuncture, case report |
