Background/Aim: Functional dyspepsia is characterized by chronic and recurrent gastrointestinal symptoms without clear causes. This study aimed to evaluate the changes in the autonomic nervous system (ANS) after Korean Medical treatment in patients with functional dyspepsia (FD).

Materials and Methods: A total of 346 patients with FD received a combination of korean medical treatment, including acupuncture, herbal medicine, and various forms of physical stimulation for two weeks. Heart rate variability (HRV) was measured on the day of hospitalization and discharge to measure ANS function.

Results: After treatment, MHR, Ln_LFNorm were statistically significantly lower, and RMSSD and Ln_HFNorm were statistically significantly higher. Other indicators showed a tendency but were not statistically significant.

Conclusions: The study suggests that HRV in FD patients is stabilized through korean medical treatment, and the use of HRV can be considered for future treatment and prognosis determination.
15 심박변이도 검사를 통한 기능성 소화불량 환자의 자율신경 특성 단면연구 이상현,노기환,최규호,노현민 2021.11 ~ 학회지
Background/Aims: Functional dyspepsia is characterized by chronic gastrointestinal symptoms without diseases of the internal organs. This study aimed to explore the impact of gender and age on heart rate variability (HRV) in patients with functional dyspepsia.

Materials and Methods: A total of 342 functional dyspepsia patients admitted to a Korean Medicine hospital were selected based on age classification and underwent HRV testing post-admission.

Results: In the study, men had higher levels of certain heart rate variability (HRV) parameters than women, with significant differences in normalized Low Frequency, LF/HF ratio, and Ectopic Beats, while women had significantly higher normalized High Frequency. Younger patients showed significantly higher HRV measures in some parameters compared to older groups, with the highest ectopic beats observed in the elderly.

Conclusions: HRV measurements in functional dyspepsia patients needs to be interpreted considering gender and age.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to clinically identify various symptoms and characteristics of the autonomic
nervous system in functional dyspesia(FD) patients with HRV.
Methods: This study was retrospectively investigated through chart analysis of 346 FD patients among patients who
visited the Weedahm Korean Medicine Hospital from November 2021 to March 2023. Depending on the patient's
age, young people were classified as 19-34 years old, middle-aged people were classified as 35-64 years old, and
old people were 65 years old or older, and blood pressure, BMI of patients were measured. HRV was measured to
confirm the function of autonomic nerves.
Results: In the HRV measurement, SDNN, TP, LF, HF, ln_HFNorm (n.u.) was higher in young people than
middle-aged and elderly people, especially in SDNN, TP, LF, and HF, young people were significantly higher than
middle-aged and elderly people, and LF/HF ratio and ln_LFNorm (n.u.) were higher in middle-aged and elderly
people than young and old people. Symptom values of epigastric discomfort, palpitation, chest dyscomfort, and
dizziness were higher in the middle-aged and elderly than in the middle-aged and elderly, while headaches were
significantly higher in the young and elderly than in the middle-aged and elderly. In the case of indigestion value,
the young people were higher than the middle-aged and elderly.
Conclusions: As a result of clinically confirming the symptoms of FD patients and the characteristics of the autonomic
nervous system through HRV, it was found that the characteristics according to age correspond to general
epidemiology.

The association of Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease symptoms and Heart Rate
Variability through a retrospective cross-sectional study
Hyeon-Min Noh1*, Gyu-Ho Choi1, Gi-Hwan Rho2

2Department of Internal Medicine, Weedahm Korean Medical Hospital
Background/Aims: Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease(GERD) is a disease in which the contents of the stomach flow
back to the esophagus and cause uncomfortable symptoms or complications. The esophagus originates from the
foregut and is stimulated by autonomic nerves through the vagus nerve, and heart rate variability (HRV) is widely
used as a measurement tool to evaluate the function of the autonomic nervous system. Therefore, this study aims
to investigate the relationship between gastroesophageal reflux disease and heart rate variability test results.
Materials and Methods: Among the patients admitted to Weedahm Korean Medical Hospital from November 2021
to March 2023, 168 patients with GERD history were examined for gastroesophageal reflux disease symptoms and
heart rate variability tests to analyze the association.
Results: The average age of all patients was 58.17 years and the average BMI was 22.27. Of a total of 168 GERD
patients, 138 patients had symptoms of reflux, 127 patients with heartburn, 26 patients with globus hystericus, and
138 patients with belching symptoms. People with Gastroesophageal reflux symptoms (reflux, heartburn, globus
hystericus, and belching) had low levels of SDNN, RMSSD, and TP, indicating lower resistance to stress and lower
overall autonomic nervous system activity. SDNN, RMSSD, TP, LF, HF, and LF/HF Ratio all showed lower
tendencies in women than men, but there was no statistical significance.
Conclusions: Through this study, it was confirmed that autonomic nerve function decline is common in GERD
patients. This decline in function may be related to symptoms such as reflux, heartburn, globus hystericus, and
belching, respectively, but there was no statistical significance.
